As the necessity of introducing AI education in elementary and secondary schools has recently been emphasized, the importance of strengthening the AI education capacity of teachers to teach it is also increasing. To this end, it is necessary to lay the foundation not only for re-education of incumbent teachers but also for pre-service teachers who will teach future students to strengthen their AI education capabilities from undergraduate days.
For this purpose, We met Professor Kim Jae-hyun, the president of Sungkyunkwan University's Undergraduate School of Education and the president of the Graduate School of Education, who is leading AI education in the entire undergraduate education of the College of Education.
Q. Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I'm Kim Jae-hyun, a professor of computer education at Sungkyunkwan University's College of Education. Currently, I am the dean of the College of Education and the head of the Graduate School of Education, and heads the AI education strengthening support project of the AI Innovation Sharing University supported by the Ministry of Education. Regarding the association, I am serving as the president of the Korean Internet Information Society, the director of the Information Science Association and the chairman of the Education Committee, and the auditor of the Computer Education Association.
From 2002 to the present, I trained of numerous information teachers and participated the development of the 2015 revised curriculum of the Ministry of Education while working in the Department of Computer Education at Sungkyunkwan University. I wrote several textbooks and university materials, including middle school information and high school information subject. Recently, I participated as a researcher in charge of developing the curriculum of 'repair and artificial intelligence' and 'artificial intelligence basics' for high school artificial intelligence education, and I wrote a textbook of it. Currently, I am a member of the Innovation Committee on the Liberal Arts and Training System and the High School Curriculum Committee.
Q. I saw an article that Sungkyunkwan University was selected as a project to support strengthening AI education at elementary and secondary teacher training universities in 2021 June. Why should the College of Education provide AI education to prospective teachers?
These days, we spend most of our daily lives with software applied with artificial intelligence. The development of artificial intelligence technology in the future will have more and more impact on our future lives and job changes, and complex problems will not be solved without the application of artificial intelligence technology in all academic and industrial fields. Therefore, collaboration with artificial intelligence will be more important in the future generation, and for this, mutual cooperation will be possible only when humans understand artificial intelligence well.
In order to live as a member of the artificial intelligence era, AI education is not an option but an ability to creatively and efficiently solve problems in real life and various academic fields based on AI concepts and principles. Overseas developed countries have already reorganized their elementary, middle, and high school curriculum for AI education, and the importance of universities can be guessed from the reality that they are also focusing on artificial intelligence education.
Q. I heard that Sungkyunkwan University's College of Education is leading various education programs to strengthen AI education capabilities for undergraduates. Please tell us about the curriculum that is currently being pursued or will be carried out in the future.
Sungkyunkwan University's College of Education intends to run various comparison programs to foster educational leaders who will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution and the AI era, to restructure undergraduate courses, improve AI convergence education majors, and strengthen practical AI education leadership.
Sungkyunkwan University's College of Education is conducting education to strengthen the competency of pre-service teachers through curriculum, field-based expertise, student-participatory capacity building programs, and regional sharing projects.
Q. How is the major curriculum currently operated for AI convergence education, and what subjects will be newly established in the future?
1. Establishment of AI convergence education system through restructuring of major curriculum
Sungkyunkwan University's College of Education has established an AI convergence education system to foster AI education professionals and spread their values. Since 2016, it has been mandatory to complete basic AI education courses for all students in line with the school's liberal arts education policy, and it operates a specialized comparison program for teachers and students. In addition, subjects for AI convergence education were added to major subjects for each department so that they could grow into teachers and educational experts with AI capabilities through linkage between studies. In particular, through connection with the newly selected artificial intelligence innovation sharing university project, we would like to provide education for various AI+Education capabilities to college students.
■ Establish a basic undergraduate AI curriculum by establishing a Data Science (DS) course
The basic AI curriculum at Sungkyunkwan University's College of Education is required to complete the newly established Data Science (DS) curriculum this year.
Basic SW education for all students, which was started by establishing Sungkyunkwan SW Education Center in 2016, is mandatory for a total of three subjects: "Computing Thinking and SW Coding," "Problem Solving Algorithm," and "AI Basic and Utilization." In 2021, Sungkyunkwan SW Education Center was newly expanded and reorganized into a Data Science (DS) education center, and the curriculum was reorganized into four DS-based subjects and two DS-deep subjects. In this way, we laid the foundation for all students to grow into teachers and educational experts with AI capabilities by completing four DS-based courses as a necessity for liberal arts.
Q. What courses are operated in the AI convergence education major of Sungkyunkwan University's Graduate School of Education?
2. Improvement of AI Convergence Education Major in Graduate School of Education
In order to achieve AI capabilities and other curriculum convergence professional personnel training goals, the graduate of this project selects three operational policies: strengthening current teachers' AI capabilities, delivering the latest theory and practical knowledge, and carrying out AI convergence projects.
Q. From the curriculum of undergraduate and graduate schools, it seems that pre-service teachers and incumbent teachers are studying a lot to strengthen their AI education capabilities. In addition to the curriculum for these degree courses, what programs are being operated to strengthen AI education guidance capabilities?
3. Strengthening practical AI education guidance capabilities through the operation of comparative programs
In order to strengthen the practical AI education guidance capabilities of pre-service teachers, we would like to run various comparative student participation programs and class competency enhancement programs for the implementation of artificial intelligence education in a non-face-to-face class environment. To strengthen non-face-to-face class capabilities, we would like to build an online content production room for instructors and run various online AI education workshops, including how to use AI-based learning management systems, AI-based edutech, and overall AI trends and issues. In order to strengthen the comparison and competency, AI education hackathon involving all departments of the College of Education, special lectures inviting AI experts for college of Education, and common capstone design will be promoted.
Q. In order to operate such a variety of curriculums, I think there should be enough practice space to practice AI education. How is the infrastructure for AI education currently established?
4. Provides a community environment where AI education is dedicated and knowledge-sharing
We would like to carry out all three tasks: establishing a creative and convergent AI education space, discovering and operating regional linkage and cooperation projects, and establishing a SKKU-AI Network for Teachers (SAINT) community as a self-promoting task.
- Establishment of AI education space: We will significantly improve fixed and one-way computer rooms, and improve the general class space as an active learning class room for team-based interactive classes.
- We will establish close cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, the Seoul-Gyeonggi Information Teachers Association, the Seoul-Gyeonggi AI Education Leading School, the Seoul-Gyeonggi AI Convergence Education High School, and the Korea Information Science Education Association to share AI-related knowledge and information.
- Creating an Ecosystem for Pre-service Teachers to Adapt to School and Revitalize SW-AI Education: We will establish a SKKU-AI Network for Teachers (SAINT) community for mutual network and information exchange for incumbent teachers, graduates of the Graduate School of Education.
In addition, we would like to reorganize the AI curriculum of not only the computer education department but also the entire department of the College of Education, and the reorganization direction is largely defined as follows:
Sungkyunkwan University's College of Education aims to provide innovative AI classes by expanding creative AI education spaces and online content production rooms, and to continuously open field-oriented curriculums and reorganize subjects reflecting consumer needs through demand analysis of 'AI convergence education' at the Graduate School of Education.
Q. It seems that many changes were made in the major curriculum, including the creation of an AI education space. Lastly, please say a word for the prospective teachers.
Sungkyunkwan University aims to contribute to improving the quality of AI education in Korea by producing professional AI convergence education teachers with practical skills based on systematic promotion strategies.
There is an old saying that the quality of education does not exceed the quality of teachers. Pre-service teachers who want to enter the school as teachers in the future must receive a minimum amount of AI education along with their major education to cultivate the necessary competencies for future generations through convergence and utilization with their subjects. This is the most important factor in fostering future talents in the country and is the reason why AI education should be mandatory for all prospective teachers.
We hope that many people who dream of becoming prospective teachers will understand the need for AI education and actively utilize various programs supported by the government and schools to strengthen their necessary capabilities. Thank you.
